All aboard for Vietnam!

I was almost a reluctant visitor to Vietnam in 1972 (Thanks Gough Whitlam!), and I've always wondered how things might have turned out.....
Now we are going as tourists to this fascinating country- many of our friends and relatives have been lately, with varied levels of enjoyment it must be said, and many adventures await!

Ahh, the vagaries of Internet Blogging!

Honestly, I thought a daily blog was going to be easy, and a good way to keep in touch. NOT SO!! We have found that the Internet revolution has not hit home in rural France as expected. In fact, le 'wee-fee' (wi-fi to youse lot) is rare and flaky, a bit like Tony's hair at the moment. (See pic) The top pic is the four of us, (still friends- just) together with Aude, our chic landlady, before we headed off on our final adventure. I will attempt to summarise the last few days (oh, all right, week) in a few bite-sized bloggy chunks; they're both tasty and good for you! First, a quick recap of our rendezvous in Avignon. A simple plan. James's (2) come down from Paris on the VFT (very fast train) to Avignon station. Macers (2) come down from God knows where on a series of rust buckets to Avignon, taking all day and arriving 'about 4'. On the Road pt 2 August 3-4

Out of Bergen (easily, we’d already done it twice previously) on to Luster via the snow road (see photos of the traffic jam) and a night at Dosen Gard. Then via Lom to Geiranger and another series of hairpin bends to Eidsdal, in a cabin perched on the side of a mountain! Finally to Hjelle via Stryn, more tunnels and ferries, to a magnificent old Swiss style hotel on the edge of a glacier-fed lake.

Paris, Day 1

Day 1: Gay Paris, here we are! The rigors of the 24 hour travel-fest are long forgotten. Suffice to say that the sooner somebody invents a faster way to get around the planet the better! Rhonda just laps it up. Look at her excited expression, and this is still at Tullamarine... She had just made a rather canny purchase, though- another bargain for the trip! Paris is an amazing city, full of the most stylish women, usually with a dog at heel, or in their arms. Seriously, I kid you not, there was a woman on the plane from Hong Kong to Paris with a small black dog in a bag at her feet for the whole 12 and a half hours- I presume she had drugged it, as there was not a sound until we were not far from Paris and the chlomicalm started to wear off! This is a picture of the only hound in Paris worthy of the name- reminded us a bit of Jazz the wonderdog, Mace! Our room at Le Hotel des Grandes Ecoles is wonderful- right in the heart of the Latin Quarter with cafes, patisseries, pubs, gelati bars...
